Arrogant, sarcastic and brusque, Rodney speaks his mind with little respect for authority. Outwardly dismissive of people, he does in fact care and his more daring ideas are often because either his team or Atlantis is in danger.

The arrogance hides a deeply insecure man, the roots of which are embedded in a very unpleasant upbringing. This is also where his lack of trust comes from.

Over the years on Atlantis though he has changed. He is still a fish out of water, but he is more willing to admit his mistakes and short-comings. However, it's unlikely he'll ever truly lose his tendancy to snark.

Eldest of two children, Rodney studied physics and astrophysics, gaining a masters degree in both from Boston University.

He worked on the USAF payrole for several years before getting security clearance for the Stargate Programme, running simulations from Area 52. It's not known how long he was here, but he became what the government believe to be the foremost expert in wormhole technology.

Rodney was introduced to Stargate Command by Colonel Simmons, a pawn in Simmons' game to get the Stargate programme shut down. Rodney was to assist in the recovery of one of SG1's personnel, but succeeded only in alienating Samantha Carter. His tour ended with his dismissal and transfer to Russia.

A year later and an attack on the SGC meant many of the top scientists being brought in, Rodney included. When his idea about an EM generator backfired, he became a humbler person and finally made amends with Carter.

It's unknown at which point he was transfered to Antarctica, but the presumption is that it was to study the Ancient Outpost discovered by SG1. He was then shortlisted for the Atlantis Expedition, led by Doctor Elizabeth Weir.

Since that expedition took place, he has become both Chief Scientist and a member of Colonel Sheppard's team during offworld missions.

Jeannie Miller

Jeannie is Rodney's younger sister. Jeannie was set to be a even better scientist than her brother before she dropped out of university pregnant. Rodney's belief she made the wrong decision left them estranged for three years, only recently have they made amends.

Samantha Carter

Sam was Rodney's first contact at SGC and he did not make a good impression. Sam refuses to let him help and they fight over whether Teal'c is still alive. Their relationship improves a little when Rodney returns to the SGC during Anubis' attack. Rodney did have something of a crush on Sam, evidenced by his hallunicating her when he's involved in a crash, but he seems to have outgrown this recently.

John Sheppard, Teyla and Ronon

John Sheppard became ranking military officer after Sumner is killed by the Wraith. His position is formalised a year later when contact is reestablished with Earth. He leads the flagship away team; the members being Rodney, Teyla and Ronon. Teyla is Athosian, the first human race the expedition encountered, whilst Ronon is from Sateda. Each member is very different but they all bring something and have formed a closely-knitted group.

Laura Cadman

Laura and Rodney have a somewhat turbulant history. Their first encounter whilst on an offworld mission ended in them being swept up by a Dart beam. Attempts to recover them resulted in Rodney being rematerialised, but with Cadman's consciousness in his head. Their conflicting personalities nearly ended both their careers but a last-minute idea of Rodney's saved the day. Laura still likes to bug Rodney and is forever winding him up.
